JOHNNY SAINT

Johnny Saint won the World Lightweight Championship in the final of a tournament to find a successor to George Kidd after the Scottish ring maestro retired. And what a successor. Saint was the supreme hold and counter-hold wrestler and combined a technical skill with acrobatic ability. Although he enjoyed wrestling people like Jon Cortez, Steve Grey and Mike Jordan, he also enjoyed mixing it with the likes of Mark Rocco and Dave Finlay. In Germany he took on the heavyweights with great success and also wrestled in Japan - a first for a lightweight wrestler. When Natalie Neidhart, the daughter of former WWE superstar Jim Neidhart wrestled at the Town Hall in Rhyl a couple of years ago, Saint happened to call in to say hello to the lads. After meeting John, Natalie said "I can't believe I've just met Johnny Saint. Wait till I tell my dad". Such is the esteem in which Saint is held all over the World. Saint was once an amateur boxer - trained by Alf Robinson - an uncle of Billy Robinson. He won various titles including an A.B.A. title when he was 15 years old. He started wrestling on his 18th birthday and appeared on bills along side people like Micky Kiley, Gordon Corbett and Orig Williams. He moved to Joint Promotions in the early 60's and enjoyed a huge fan following - especially if he was matched with Jim Breaks or Zolton Boscik. Saint retired from the ring a few years ago but recently made a successful comeback. He has taken on the odd bout and will continue to do so for as long as he is still enjoying it. If you are a wrestling fan who has never seen Saint in his heyday, don't miss an opportunity to see a master in action if he should come to your town.
