GEORGE KIDD

George Kidd held the World Lightweight Championship for 26 years!. An incredible feat when you consider, even as a lightweight, most of his opponents outweighed him. George weighed only nine and a half stone - a half stone under the lightweight limit and stood just 5' 6". He started wrestling when he was demobbed from the Navy in 1946. He was trained by the Bradford ex Olympic wrestler and promoter Norman Morrell. He had his first paid contest in 1946 at the Caird Hall in his home town Dundee and within twelve months he had lifted the Scottish Lightweight Title. In 1948 he took the British title from Jack Dempsey and the following year he travelled to Paris to compete for the European Title and once again he was victorious. Two years later he added the World Title by defeating the Frenchman Reny Ben Chemoul. During his career George defended title many many times against the best in the business including Jim Breaks, Jon Cortez, Johnny Saint, Zoltan Boscik and Adrian Street. He wasn't a lover of tag team matches, but during his time he partnered the famous D.J. turned wrestler Jimmy Saville (how about that then?) and the other Scottish favourite Andy Robin. George had a fantastic sense of balance and seemed to know what his opponent was going to do next. He was always one move ahead. He retired as undefeated and undisputed World Lightweight Champion in 1976 after a match with the heavier 'Iron Man' Steve Logan. He died in 1998 aged 73.
